Geelong Photographer Alan Barber is a professional photographer with more than 20 years of experience in editorial, corporate and architectural photography.

I am Alan Barber, an editorial, corporate and architectural photographer based in Geelong and covering assignments throughout the Melbourne, Victoria and wider Australia.

My aim is to deliver inspiring and striking photography above and beyond the brief.

The background story goes something like this.

Somewhere between Tim Page and David Bailey there was a role model. Tim got to travel the world and David Bailey was mates with Mick Jagger.
I was 14. Surely if I got a battered Nikon F2 like Tim’s the rest would fall into place?

Well I got a Praktika so it didn’t. But it was an SLR and it was rugged and manual and pumped out some gritty black and whites, of people, landscapes and bleak winter days in an English newtown - a long, long way from the sea.

I did eventually acquire a Nikon and pointed it at the village fetes and fairs and the local jazz festival. I’d run home, process the film in a blacked out bedroom, and dutifully put the prints into a stiff envelope and send them into the local paper. Holding my breath as I skimmed though the paper on publication date. It had started - the battle to prove yourself.

Eventually my words and pictures made it to regional and national newspapers, and it’s been a thrilling industry to work in.

Now I’m in Australia, the land of photo opportunity. I still shoot for the daily news but also work in Geelong and Melbourne and shoot all over Australia for corporate and architectural clients.

I am proud to live and work in the Geelong area and over the last 15 years have witnessed (through the lens) the city’s strife and renaissance, its ongoing challenges and its triumphs - and I’m not just talking about the football club. I feel very fortunate to be a photographer working in a beautiful community like Geelong.

I still recognise the brilliance of other people (such as René Burri, Ema Peter, Vivien Maier, Walker Evans, Joel Sternfield, Helen Binet, Joe Fletcher and Trente Parke). I'm still working on upping my game. Isn't life about continually improving what we do?

I still haven't owned a Nikon F2
